AIME Day 1 at the University of Canberra

For the first time, Monaro High School has participated in the AIME mentoring program.

Students have had multiple sessions with AIME mentors at school discussing environmental and cultural issues and ways to empower ourselves to create and foster positive change.

Now it was time to head on over to the University of Canberra to meet with other AIME mentors and students engaging in the program.

On a frosty morning, Miss Godden and six of our young Indigenous leaders packed into a transporter and headed off on the 125km drive to UC. On arrival, there were some logistical errors with parking and locating the right building. We ended up having to walk from one end of the university to the other to get to the right building but that didn’t worry us and we got stuck straight into it as soon as we arrived!

The day consisted of three different one-hour sessions, where we worked in table groups of different students from different schools to come up with creative and innovative responses to the activities. We learnt some of AIME’S values, such as ‘Throw SHAME out the door’ and celebrating one another for trying and giving things a go.

We had heaps of fun getting to know other Indigenous students from other schools, played a bit of footy, learnt a bit about culture and ourselves, while building our leadership skills and therefore ourselves.

Can not wait for day 2!
