Day out

On a local property students were given a tour by Richard Swain, where he demonstrated how to make fire, the students where enthusiastic to have a go, they where then able to enjoy a BBQ from their attempts. Students were also shown a scar on a tree that may have provided implements. All the students had a great day out.

Seven Sister Songlines – National Museum Australia Excursion

The day began with a bus full of excited chattery students of all ages, across high school and primary. We had 15 different MHS students attend along with two teachers to the Museum. Upon arrival, the students were antsy and excited waiting to enter the immersive dome and be transported across the desert and to rock art sites at Walinyga (Cave Hill) and be told dreamtime stories about the seven sister while interacting with over 100 different pieces of art. The Seven Sister story was about the sister fleeing from a sorcerer along the ancestral routes, the sisters fled across deserts being perused relentlessly. The story’s purpose was to teach young indigenous women and to protect themselves from danger, this is important to family and teaching alike.

After close to two hours within this immersive experience the group returned from the cave insightful and consumed with thought, we wandered around the museum for the remainder of our time discussing and debriefing on the story we had experienced, the art we had seen and the lessons we learnt from the seven sisters’. After enough time, it was time to head home, but not without a cheeky stop in at Maccas to feed their hungry bellies after feeding their hungry minds. Great day, students and adults learnt a lot and definitely would recommend.
