Jindabyne Central School Cultural Awareness Day

On 3 November 2015, a formal assembly was held at Jindabyne Central School for Cultural Awareness Day.

In keeping with this year’s NAIDOC theme, We All Stand on Solid Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate, the assembly recognised the strong connection of Aboriginal people with the land and sea, and honoured those who work to preserve sacred and significant sites and stories. Students at Jindabyne Central School had an opportunity to learn about culture and listen to shared stories.

The morning began with a Welcome to Country, delivered by Ngarigo Elder Aunty Colleen, followed by a smoking ceremony performed by Jandamarra Wall.

The students heard from guest speakers and watched films from the National Film and Sound Archives and Black Screen Project. The assembly was also treated to a special performance of ‘People of the Mountains and the Sea’ by the Black Ducks, comprising students from Eden Marine Technology High.

This assembly was truly memorable and helped to generate interest in culture while creating an atmosphere of respect for First Peoples, and all people, here in the Snowy Mountains.
